February’s First Thursdays in the Library: where good ideas come from

Join us at February’s First Thursdays in the Library where Dr. Jack Brown will discuss  the emergence of innovations: Where good ideas come from.

When: The next “First Thursdays” will occur on February 3rd from 12-1. Mark your calendar for the first Thursday of each month during this time to join us!

Where: The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY

First, we will show a video of a TED Talk by Dr. Steven Johnson, who discusses where good ideas come from.

Next, we are fortunate to have Jack Brown, Ph.D., with us. He will build upon Johnson’s talk by looking at examples of creativity in technologies developed in the past 150 years.  Many other factors besides Johnson’s collaborative ferment have shaped the emergence of innovations — and those processes are often  as fascinating as the resulting technologies.  Dr. Brown teaches the history of technology in UVA’s Department of Science, Technology, and Society.

Finally, our Historical Collections Department will have relevant historical content on display.

First Thursdays in the Library Series. During the 2010/11 school year, the Library is offering a new series called “First Thursdays in the Library”. Our hope is to feature topics of interest to you that will stimulate thought and discussion. Each “First Thursdays” will begin with viewing a TED Talk. If you’re not familiar with these web-based lectures, TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) is a non-profit devoted to sharing “ideas worth spreading” from leaders in their fields. Following the video, a UVa expert will further the discussion, and, at times, a technology expert from the Library will show interesting apps and resources to help increase your knowledge.
