On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, the annual United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring 11 Library staff members devoted their time to Breath of Hope a non-profit organization striving to promote awareness of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) birth defects.

Day of Caring 2009
CDH severely compromises lung growth and development, necessitating early neonatal intensive care. Even with the best of care, an infant with this defect faces a 50% chance of survival.
The library team worked on two projects, assembling infant handprint kits and ribbon cards. The kits will be given to families with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University of Virginia Hospital as well as to Breath of Hope expectant parents. The cards, featuring aqua blue ribbons and information about Breath of Hope, will be used to promote CDH Awareness Day (March 31st).
Helping the “Breath of Hope” foundation gave the library volunteers a way to connect to and care for a mission beyond the library walls and the world of journals and books.
